Senatorial Race: The Defeat Not Personal For Dankwambo, But Loss To Gombe (I)
By Kabir Sani Kabir
The media has been agog with the news and in some cases, sneers at Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo’s defeat in the just concluded Senatorial contest in Gombe North district.
It has been announced early Monday morning that Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo was defeated in the Gombe North senatorial district election by Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
What has sounded like mockery seems to have appeared in the gait and demeanor of certain individuals, equally on social media.
But the feeling is that this is absolutely an unhelpful approach to take, for those that know Dr. Dankwambo would readily attest that as a devout Muslim, he absolutely believes that power belongs to Almighty Allah, and He takes it from whomsoever He wants to take it from, and gives it to whomsoever He wishes to bestow it upon. Long before he ever dreamed of running for the Senatorial Seat, he had pointed in that direction. His equanimity to the results declared signifies his total submission to the will of Almighty Allah.
There’s a reason to agree that the loss cannot be personal to Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo. The aim of sending him to senate by the good people of Gombe North was ab initio, to offer quality representation.
A Senator that can stand shoulder to shoulder with distinguished peers to move Nigeria forward, for Dankwambo comes from an impeccable academic heritage, having attended Ivy league academic institutions in virtually all parts of Nigeria.
He obtained his first degree at the well known premier university in Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before picking a Master’s degree at a much older university in the southern part of the country, the world class University of Lagos in the South West.
For a post graduate diploma, he went to the heart of the Niger Delta and attended the famous Delta State University, Abraka in Urhobo land, Delta State and to cap it up, he chose one of the oldest private universities in Nigeria, Igbinedion University, Okada in Edo State, South South Nigeria, for his doctorate degree.
Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has also been seen on the circuit delivering a lecture to distinguished members of the academic community at the oldest University in Nigeria, the 70 year old University of Ibadan, South West Nigeria.
Dr. Dankwambo had reached the apogee of his career, rising to become the Accountant General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, two term governor of Gombe State and he gives all glory to Almighty Allah, for His goodness and mercies to him.
The widely exposed, tried and tested gentle governor of Gombe State was in the race to bring his wealth of experience to bear in the service of his people. But the power to take him to that position belonged to his very good people who have the power of the vote, and ultimately, the perfect will of the Almighty, the owner of the destiny of every one.
He will rest at the will of the Almighty Allah, and the voting decision of his own people, without whom, he would never have been who that he is today.
To those who make mockery of the loss, it is pertinent to let them know that in every circumstance, grace is required to see us through. It is not that Dr. Dankwambo’s entire being rests on just being Senator. Far from it!
With his distinguished academic background and proven competence, his many choices are at his feet. He will feel at home with any job of his pick, either nationally, or internationally. He is not really a professional politician. He is a proven and time tested top Accountant General without blemish.
If he wants to become a University lecturer, there’d be a rush for his services and experience. So what really is the gloating all about that a Senatorial election was lost ?
Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has brought so much indomitable courage into Gombe governance to make it so significant in the affairs of Nigeria. Everyone is proud of the Infrastructural development he wrought on Gombe State, the Jewel In The Savannah. His giant strides shall be the reference point and benchmark for a long time to come.
