Borno state Sunday recorded first case of COVID-19. Contacts tracing is being advised.

A retired anesthetic nurse working with MSF an international organisation in Pulka town of Gwoza local government area of Borno state, northeast Nigeria, has died of COVID-19 related symptoms.

A medical doctor at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) disclosed that a sample was taken from the deceased and the result came out positive for coronavirus.

There are fears that other health workers, the colleagues of the index may have been exposed to the virus.

The index was said to have had contact with workers both within and outside the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

“He was brought in from Pulka to UMTH by two nurses who are also now at risk,” the source disclosed.

“This evening after his demise, female friends, relatives and other mourners gathered in his house leading to having contact with his family who have been having direct contact with him since he was brought from Pulka (during his 2 days admission).

“And the worst of all is he is staying in Umaru Shehu Ultra Modern Hospital USUMH staff quarters which is within the hospital premises thereby exposing more health workers and patients as well,” a communication that went viral via social media revealed.

A member of the Task Force on COVID-19 in Borno also confirmed the development. The source noted that the committee deliberate on the case at a meeting today.

All efforts to get the reaction of the Deputy Governor, who is the chairman of the Task Force proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.

A source from MSF international organisation medical organisation in Borno also confirmed the report.

Confirming the tragedy, MSF management has informed her members of staff that their colleague has been tested positive for COVID-19.

“He was not suspected from the beginning because he had no travel history outside Pulka.

“That’s means the virus is already in our Community.
