Could they be armed robbers, kidnappers, hired assassins and/or all of the above?
unknown gunmen in their unrecorded number, lay ambush against motorists on the road leading to Yola from Chigari, Fufore local government area, Adamawa State, Northeast Nigeria.
The gangsters’ mission was unclear as none of them could be identified to be granted interview by the Periscope investigative reporter.
Some villagers said the gunmen were armed robbers having the mission to dispossess passengers of their wealth, while some people conceived that the gunmen have deeper, deadly mission than mere robbery.
The first passengers that have fallen prey to the terrorists trap were asked to lie down not to spoil the show.
“While they were made to liedown, there was a phone call. They had the informant saying that Alhaji Irema chigari was on his way. He has just taken off. That there was an engagement that delayed his take off.
Some vehicles passed without being stoped not until when Irema’s vehicle was spotted. He could not stop for the terrorists to humiliate him, the gunmen would also not want him to escape as he was apparently the lone target.
“They just came out from their hiding and started shooting. Though their bullets got me, I couldn’t stop. It would have been a registered mourning,” Irema said.
“Alhaji Irema chigari is a business tycoon. His wealth becomes security threat in Chigari, he therefore would have to be relocated to Yola, while he keeps on with his business in Chigari.
“Who were the gunmen? Irema was the target, was he to be abducted for ransom or he was to be assassinated?” Usman Chigari would asked.
An elder in Chigari alleged that hard hearted criminals who ought to have been condemned while serving jail terms, were pardoned and set free only to come and start terrorising peaceful communities.
Having received the tragic news, Hon. Abdullahi Umar Yapak a member representing Verre constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, rushed to FMC Yola where Irema who sustained multiple bullet wounds was taken for treatment.
Yapak revealed to the Periscope reporter that his constituency has been under attack but the foolish must be flushed out soon.
“Insecurity remains intolerable in my constituency; about a week ago, there was this motorist who was killed by some runaway criminals who couldn’t steal the Toyota Starlet dumped in a bush along Fufore road.
“Today is a businessman, a philanthropist who has made a mark in Chigari and beyond. Some criminals want to end his life without a just cause.
“This nonsense must be stopped. Adequate security would be drafted in the area to ensure that in whatever name they bear, terrorists are totally flushed out of my constituency and the state in general, In Sha Allah,” Yapak remarked.
