Binani’s bill on setting up a medical college in MAUTECH, upgrading FMC Yola to teaching hospital passes second reading

The motion, which translated into bill, sponsored by Sen. Ashatu Dahiru Ahmed Modibbo Binani, (APC Adamawa Central) seeking for the setting up of a medical college in Modibbo Adama University of Technology MAUTECH Yola and upgrading of the Federal Medical Centre FMC Yola to a teaching hospital, has on Wednesday, scaled through second reading.

Recall that the committee set up by the National University Commission NUC, led by Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, sequel to the directive of the Senate President, to review the possibility of setting up a medical college in MAUTECH Yola and upgrading of FMC Yola to a teaching hospital, has submitted its report to the Executive Secretary NUC, Prof Abubakar Adamu in Abuja, Nigeria.

The committee, in part, recommended that MAUTECH Yola, has the capacity to run a medical college in 2020, FMC Yola was equally qualified to be upgraded to a teaching hospital; achieving this would however require about N17.4 billion.

Having received the blessings of the entire senators, Binani’s bill was forwarded to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND chaired by Sen Ahmad Babba Kaita (APC, Katsina North) to study the possibility of implementing the Bill’s requests.

The committee was given four weeks within which to submit its report.
