There are only 44 medical doctors in the entire public hospitals owned by the Adamawa State government. The number is grossly inadequate because the state has an estimated population of 4.4 million people.

The commissioner of health Prof. Abdullahi Isa, disclosed this to the staff and management of the federal medical centre FMC Yola who paid him a congratulatory visit Thursday, in his office.

The commissioner has revealed the resolve and readiness of the Fintiri led administration to uplift the standard of healthcare delivery in the state.

“The condition of healthcare delivery in Adamawa state is summarily alarming. There are only 44 medical doctors in the state government hospitals for the population of about 4.4 million people,” Isa said.

The commissioner lamented that the medical doctors manning the entire state government hospitals were far less than the number of medical doctors in FMC Yola. There were also some local government areas, districts and villages that lacked cottage hospitals and dispensaries. This called for the need of synergy and continued collaboration between Adamawa state government through the state ministry of health and FMC Yola.

The commissioner revealed that the state government would soon build more dispensaries and cottage hospitals in the areas that were lacking. Some of the existing cottage hospitals would also be upgraded. Funds were already allocated for that purpose.

This suggested that there would be employment of more medical personnel, the commissioner assured.

“FMC Yola remains my home. The entire members of staff are members of the family I enjoyed working with for over four years.

“I benefitted from the mentorship; the leadership style of our MD Prof. Auwal Muhammad Abubakar and I’m going to translate it to my appointment as a commissioner.

“My door is always open to all of you for assistance, advice and guidance to be able to achieve excellence,” Prof. said.

Prof. Auwal earlier congratulated Prof Isa for the new and worthy appointment, where he assured continued support, cooperation and collaboration to be able to upgrade the standard of healthcare delivery services in the state.

Abdullahi Isa is the first Professor to be appointed commissioner of health in Adamawa Staten, nothing short of success in healthcare service delivery is expected, The Periscope has dedicated a column for performance appraisal.
