ADAMAWA: Police arrests two rapists of minor, one at large

The Periscope reporter

Policemen have arrested daddy and one other, alleged criminals that drugged, raped and abandoned a 15-year old girl by the road side for dogs to feast on, while one of the gang members is still at large.

The Periscope earlier reported that a minor was found, bleeding and unconscious, abandoned by the roadside leading to Jimeta central Eid Mosque, Yola north local government area of Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria, on Thursday in the evening.

The unconscious minor was taken to the hospital. Having regained her consciousness, she revealed that the predators were three in number. They forced her into a vehicle and drugged her using handkerchief.

She identified the leader of the predators who tried to lure her. When she declined to his solicitations, he forced her into the vehicle they were using. She said he was known as daddy.

Daddy’s arrest by the security operatives led to the arrest of other predator. They both confessed committing the criminal act.

The Periscope reporter called to confirm the arrests but the Police Public Relations Officer DSP Suleiman Yahya Nguroge could not get to be reached as at press time.

Daddy’s relatives have visited the survivor twice in the hospital empty handed just to plead with the survivor’s parents to withdraw the case from the police for settlement out of court because they did not want their predator, “lovely son to go to prison simply because of rape he found himself involved”.

“My daughter, a minor was drugged, raped and dumped in a debris by the roadside like carcass for hounds, by three adult predators. If she were to be your daughter, would you have agreed for settlement out of court or independent of security settlement after arrest? Or to put it in a rather simple straight forward question, what would be your reaction to the case?

“The matter is no longer under our control as a family who want justice for the shortchanged,” the survivor’s mother told a community elder who visited on behalf of the predators.

“These people are inhuman. They are not talking about the hospital bills, feeding and other things. They are not talking about the the condition their predator son and the conspiring others have subjected the survivor who’s a minor. They visited the hospital simply to have the case withdrawn from the security, now that their rapist son is arrested.

Adamawa Coalition Against Rape ACAR is closely monitoring the case. The police is doing commendable job. Withdrawing the case from security or settlement out of court is intolerable. ACAR demands a quick not delayed to be denied justice against the rapists,” Hauwa Garba a human right activists, representing ACAR said.

The Periscope earlier reported that rape cases were closely following kidnappings for ransom in Adamawa state, it is said.

“Dr. Sexana the chairman, Yola Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) popularly known as Hope Centre, revealed to newsmen that the Centre has attended to 224 raped survivors since its establishment in March 2018 to date. It has added another survivor making 225.”

ACAR said the Hope report was disheartening. Something must be done to fine-tune the justice system against justice delay. “There must be legal and political will.”
