former NITEL Training School, Bauchi is now a site of Government Day Technical College, Bauchi. Over the years, the entire site got completely vandalized of its fittings and many of its roofs.
When I visited it two weeks ago, I was able to cut a deal with the principal and his teachers.
“You supply the technical expertise and labour, I provide my personal cash,” I offered them.
“If you repair the worst damaged block well, to the appreciation of the Governor, I can get my money back and give you more to repair additional blocks. Are you in?” I asked.
They said, “Yes!”
They submitted a bill of N2.8m. I paid a N1m advance into the school’s account 10 days ago.
Yesterday, I went to check an area we can use for a chalk factory and met some students and their teachers working. It is serving as a practical class for them. Not even the girls are spared the shovel and the pan. They must not be. And the work is coming up well.
This morning, I parted with additional N500,000 that will see them through the rafter.
This is the worst case scenario. Hardly would any other block cost more than N1.5m to repair.
This way, the school can be repaired at the barest cost, an idea that the Governor has been dreaming of recently.
With less than N35m, the entire 12 blocks will look good. In the past, this would not be less than N150million.
Freeing resources, the Governor would call it.
Technical education is among His Excellency’s top priorities in education. We will help him achieve it.
With our Petroleum Training Institute at Alkaleri about to be approved by the State Exco, developing the capacity of the state in Technical education can never be out of place.
So let the work continue but do not tell H. E..
Dr Aliyu U. Tilde is the Hon. Commissioner Ministryof Education, Bauchi.
