COVID-19: NUJ Adamawa Suspends Activities

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Adamawa State Council has suspended its major activities that would negate the call for social distancing.

that may attract large gathering as part of preventative measures against the spread of Corona virus in the state.

In a statement Friday, signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the Council, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan and Fidelis Jocktan, the resolution to suspend activities was adopted during its emergency meeting on Thursday, in compliance with the directives of its National Secretariat of the union with a view to ameliorate the spread of COVID-19 considered as a global pandemic.

The Council implored its members to be cautious when gathering and disseminating news, views and events, by observing social distancing, avoiding handshake and constantly washing of hands with soap and clean water in addition to using hand sanitizers as prescribed in the safety tips against COVID-19.

The Council has called on its members to exhibit high sense of discipline and professionalism in avoidance of peddling speculations on any matter concerning COVID-19 pandemic by relying on information emanating from the Mitigation Committee constituted by Adamawa State Government.

“As critical stakeholders in the Adamawa project, the NUJ pledges to collaborate with the 10-man committee headed by Secretary to State Government Dr. Bashir Ahmed in updating citizens as well as embarking on aggressive public enlightenment against the pandemic,” the Council resolved.

The Council has commended the pragmatic steps taken by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri in curbing the spread of Coronavirus in Adamawa State by setting up isolated centre at the state pecialist hospital in Yola.

The Council also commended media organisations in the state for the measures put in place towards safeguarding members and creating awareness on the pandemic.
