Borno state government has inaugurated committee for the establishment of Medical College and Teaching Hospital in Borno State University.
Inaugurating the committee at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri Wednesday, Governor Babagana Zulum said the setting up of the committee was in line with the quest for professionalism to establish the medical college and the teaching hospital with a view to addressing inadequate medical personnel and doctors in the state.
Zulum observed that the local government areas lacked adequate and professional health personnel, posing a major challenge constraining effective and efficient healthcare delivery services in the state.
The high powered committee headed by Professor Othman Kyari has proven members with intimidating records of performances and professionalism devoid of any parochial sentiment.
“Professor Kyari a distinguished and astute scholar and a technocrat of great repute who has excelled in the medical profession and healthcare delivery services, together with equally formidable members, can surely make our dream of having a befitting state teaching hospital and medical college a reality.
“By establishing the medical college and the teaching hospital therefore, it is hoped that in near future, the ratio of mefical doctors to our population shall reduce to appreciable number, hence promote healthcare delivery.
”Established in 2016, Borno state university has been officially recognised and accredited by the National University Commission (NUC), running 32 initial programmes with appreciable number of students currently undergoing various courses in their chosen career,” Zulum said.
The governor revealed that the committee has the following as terms of reference:
To examine and advice on the feasibility of establishing Borno state college of medicine and state university teaching hospital.
To produce blueprint for the speedy realisation of establishing Borno state college of medicine and state university teaching hospital.
To proffer appropriate timelines for the commencement of the two projects.
“To provide all relevant technical documents, including appropriate design and likely cost implications for the two projects.
To advice on the best strategies of getting qualified academic staff for all the departments in the Borno state college of medicine.
To advice on the minimum staff requirement for the smooth takeoff of the Borno state university teaching hospital, among others.
