Adamawa workers groan over suspension of minimum wage

Adamawa state government workers to have danced the fresh air chorus with the Fintiri, Fintiri onomatopoeia rhythm of the ATM machine, groaned over the without notice, hence unprepared suspension of payment of salary with minimum wage as reflected in their July salary, for which most of them have over budgeted.

“Don’t you notice the state is in civil servant sober reflection?” A worker at the ATM machine lamented.

Silas, a social commentator, articulated that a hide and seek kind of cat against rat race would soon ensue between debtors and creditors, between state government workers and those manning business.

The high expectation of an impressive profit by ram sellers who are cashing on the July salary, has also dashed away, this Thursday, with the lamentation of the salary shortfall or could it be said to be shortchanged?

“I have kind of Covid-19 asked my children to kind of Covid-19 stay at home, with the kind of Covid-19 assurance that I’ll kind of Covid-19 buy two rams to be kind of Covid-19 slaughtered on eid day, so that they cannot kind of Covid-19 be paying a kind of Covid-19 visit in the name sallah greetings to be kind of Covid-19 vulnerable.

“However, we’re being kind of Covid-19 shortchanged of our salary without any cogent kind of Covid-19 notice and kind of Covid-19 explanation,” a conscious kind of Covid-19 parent would kind of Covid-19 say.

At the ATM machine, at one of the commercial banks the Periscope reporter visited Thursday, in the state capital, the seeming unannounced implemented suspension of minimum wage has attracted debate.

The group on the one hand, sympathetic to the state government, argued that withdrawal of the minimum wage is necessary as consequences of Covid-19 that has crippled commercial activities in not only the state but the country as a whole, hence the no brilliant revenue generation.

The group would add that since the civil servants are asked to stay at home without going to work, why should they enjoy full salary?

The other rather aggrieved group, whose budgets are distorted, see the suspension as uncalled for, going by the shared monetary allocation from the federal government that is not suspended, therefore a foul play.

They would argue that it is unintelligible to suppose that salary should not be paid in full to workers who are directed to stay at home; to work from home, because they are simply honouring the executive orders as additional assignment.

The Periscope tried to engage the Director General Media and Communications and the Press Secretary to the Governor in the conversation, to give the state government’s angle since there was no press release issued to the effect of the minimum wage suspension.

However, unavoidable circumstances, in the opinion of the reporter, would not let either of them respond to the telephone calls.

One of the SSA to the governor, Alhaji Sharif Al-hassan has eventually joined in the conversation, explaining that it was not a suspension of the minimum wage per se. The temporary rather unavoidable action was owing to dwindling federal allocation and the cost the state government would have to cover.

Sharif wondered as to why the workers were not informed of the development beforehand because the state government has had an understanding with the leadership of labour union on the matter resulting from the inadequacy of resources.

“Once the Covid-19 is over, you can trust the fresh air governor, he will balance all outstanding arrears and allowances,” Sharif said.

Abdulkadir a political commentator has blamed the leadership of the labour union for the excommunication on the suspension of the minimum wage, adding that the state government out to have beforehand issued a press release to that effect.
