Akwa Ibom commissioner seeks unity against Nigeria’s disintegration

* Canvasses for a confab of 36 states Commissioners with the Minister of Information and Culture

* Congratulates NIPR Leadership, Commends Activities

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, has charged the Federal Government to organise a conference of information commissioners in the country to initiate a communication strategy aimed at ending insecurity and disunity in the country.

Ememobong, who stated this during the Seventh Chief O. W. Udoh Memorial Lecture/Dinner /Award night of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Uyo at the weekend, maintained that such initiative would help to keep the unity and oneness of the country intact.

He noted that when all the states of the federation continue to see themselves differently and speak with discordant tunes due to insecurity challenges and impunity, there was bound to be dissenting voices, which might result in disagreements and disintegration.

He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to initiate an all-encompassing well designed communication strategy that would lessen the bitterness of Nigerians in various parts of the country, give them a sense of belonging and hope, as a people of one united country where everyone’s interests are considered.

Ememobong wondered how Bornu, Benue, Imo and Enugu states people, who experience more banditry, kidnappings, killings, rape and insecurity would relate with Nigeria as a united country the same way and manner with people from other parts of the country.

He, therefore, canvassed a round table confab of all Commissioners of Information in the 36 states of the country and the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammad, would evolve a communication strategy aimed at addressing the dissenting voices of aggrieved Nigerians and make peace with all segments of Nigeria.

He congratulated the state chapter of the NIPR, under the leadership of the leadership of its Chairman, Nsemeke Udoakpan, for the successful outing, especially in bringing together people like Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, who presented the memorial lecture, Bassey Albert Akpan, who chaired the event and National President of NIPR, Mukhtar Zubairu Sirajo.

Earlier, Udoakpan said the dinner after the Annual General Meeting (AGM), was the institute’s annual ritual for self-appraisal and an avenue to strategise for the future.

He said the event marked the end of his first term and commencement of his second tenure as chapter Chairman of NIPR and expressed appreciation to all who contributed to the successful hosting of the ceremony and the guests for the success of the Award/Dinner night.

Highlights of the event were the presentation of the lecture with the theme: Strengthening Nigeria’s Unity Through Effective Strategic Communication: A Public Relations Approach by Badejo-Okusanya and award presentation to Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Special Duties, Opulupum Ette, who was recognised with Award of Excellence in Capacity Development), Director-General, Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC), Anietie Ukpe (Award of Excellence in Professionalism) an Coordinator, Uyo Study Centre of NIPR, Uduak Obot (Award of Excellence in Human Capacity Development), among others
