It appears that almost after every or less than two years, the Yola ancient city market, Yola South local government area of Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria is visited by inferno, consuming hundreds of millions of naira worth of properties and commodities.
The worst hit is however that which started at about 2am on Monday and continued up to the evening razing to ground more than 90% of the entire market.
Those who spoke to the periscope Global reporter lamented that they had difficulty in accessing the firefighters; that by the time the fire truck arrived, the degree of the inferno was beyond extinguishing in addition to the lack of access road to the scene of the inferno at the centre of the market
Commenting, Alhaji Ali Kachalla the chairman of Gamzaki Traders Association in Yola said no one could tell the cause of the inferno; the state was in total blackout, no electricity; there was however the speculation that the market was hit by violent thunderstorm.
“Building, properties and commodities as you can observe, are reduced to ashes; the loses are in billions of naira”.
Kachalla, who commended the state government expressing concern, evidenced by the visit of the Deputy Governor, Prof Kaletapwa George Farauta and entourage, he pleaded with the government for a holistic intervention with a view to rebuilding the market and financially empower the victims of the inferno.
