The House of Representatives has passed for second reading, a bill seeking to establish a Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery in Maiha local government, northern senatorial district of Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria.
The bill is sponsored by Honourable Jafar Abubakar Magaji, representing Mubi North, Mubi South and Maiha Federal Constituency of Adamawa state.
Hon Magaji’s articulation pointed to the fact that owing to the population size, location and demand, siting Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery in Maiha is to say the least, strategic.
Magaji reads: “This bill was read for the first time in this hallowed chamber on Thursday, May 20, 2021.
“Mr. Speaker sir, Nursing education is a very essential subject of concern, given the fact that it plays an integral role in the formation and strengthening of nurses both in the educational and clinical settings globally.
“Nursing is at the centre of healthcare delivery in Nigeria, having a high level of maternal mortality rate, estimated at 630 per 100,000 lives: WHO 2022.
“It’s an indicator of serious maternal health needs. Recruitment and retention of appropriate number of healthcare personnel are crucial for maternal death reduction”.
Magaji explained further that although Nigeria has a relatively high number of Nursing personnel, there still lies significant shortage of nurses required to meet the healthcare needs of not only the people of Maiha and environ but the country in general.
Magaji stressed that Maiha LGA has high population size, she is however constrained by the incommensurable number of healthcare personnel, especially the nurses and midwives, despite having appreciable number of healthcare delivery centres.
The need for the establishment of such institution is rather urgent as it will greatly improve healthcare in the area.
“I therefore urge the House to support the bill. I so move,” Magaji read.
With this bill, Hon Jafar Abubakar Magaji has so far sponsored three bills, namely:
HB 679: Federal Medical Centre, Mubi, Adamawa State (Establishment) Bill, 2020
HB 735: Federal College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Mubi, Adamawa State (Establishment) Bill, 2020
HB 1368: Federal College of Nursing, Maiha (Establishment) Bill, 2021
