It was only two Fridays that the Chief Imam of the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH, Yola mosque, Malam Haruna Yawale, during Qutba, called on the ummah to consider the less privileged in the face of hardship occasioned by the rising cost of living especially in the months of August and September that crops would not be ripe for harvest and the scarcity of resources.
The Qutba suggested for a Fisabilillah monetary contribution from the well-meaning individuals and the amount realised would be invested in purchasing grains among other food items to be sold at a subsidised rate but only to the needy.
To walk the talk, actualise the QUTBA, the Imam was said to have launched the initiative by making a personal contribution of ₦20,000. Individuals have also made their contributions after the Jumu’at prayer at the mosque, while some into the bank account.
It was suggested that the mosque committee should manage the exercise; bank account number of a member who is the nai’bul Imam of the mosque, Malam Mohammed Auwal Dawud was given for the Fisabilillah contributions as follows:
Bank: UBA Plc
Account Name: Mohammed Auwal Dawud
Account Number: 2308119875
About one million naira was realised and the committee used the sum to procure some food items; rice, oil and Maggi cubes. It was on the second Friday, that the announcement was made that food items were procured and that it would be disbursed on Sunday, at subsidised rates but only to the less privileged families. The venue was given as the mosque premises.
Responding to the media, the Chief Imam of the MAUTH Mosque, Malam Haruna Yawale noted that it was neither an aid by the nongovernmental organisation nor financial assistance from any government. The fund was contributed by individuals who could be considered as unknown that have joined the Fisabilillah call to donate generously.
“We began this exercise with a minimum of one million naira that the mosque generated out of generous donations; we procured bags of rice, cartoons of maggi cubes and cooking oil and disbursed same at subsidised amounts in our effort to ease the economic hardship experienced mire by the less privileged families as a result of the subsidy removals.
“This exercise is a continued one so long as donations keep coming,” the Chief Imam said.
The people who rushed to the venue to benefit from the initiative were overwhelming, so incommensurable to the food items on ground, signifying the level of poverty and want.
Newsmen have had interactive sessions with some of the beneficiaries, they genuinely expressed gratitude, praying that the gesture would be lasting one.
One of the beneficiaries of the subsidised food items, Muhammadu Ali, a.k.a Rwanda said, “Am really delighted to express my satisfaction as I was given the food items; three muds of rice I bought at ₦2,225 instead of ₦4,500, half pack of maggi cubes I bought at ₦200 instead of ₦400 and a big bottle of cooking oil that I bought at ₦550 instead of ₦1,100. The food subsidy initiated by the MAUTH Mosque after the removal of subsidies by the government is indeed a welcome development and we remain grateful”.
Rawana has called on the government, non governmental organizations and well-meaning individuals to key into such a compassionate initiative with a view to help the poor.
“We heard but haven’t seen, we don’t know when, that government would share palliatives to the citizenry. Could it even reach us? This very one has reached us, we pray it should reach many others,” another beneficiary who mentioned his name as Garba would lament.
