On the 8th of October 2023, 8 persons in leadership positions within an opposition party in Adamawa State visited the state Numero uno who is from an opposing political party. Their mission? An 8 point agenda wrapped around a clear betrayal of all the principles of multi-party democracy. Eight people visit on the eighth day of the month to discuss eight issues that amount to a betrayal of their party? Strange but true.
It is very clear from the onset that the motivation for the meeting was two-fold. One, is an open disdain for the gubernatorial candidate of one of the parties in the 2023 elections. The candidate is one of those that have gone to the Tribunal in order to reclaim a mandate considered wrongly given to the current holder. Their disdain for the candidate has crossed all bounds of reason. It has become hate. Unfortunately, hate is a poison for the soul and it consumes it’s purveyor. Has it consumed them so irreversibly? Moderation is definitely a virtue taught by both our religions and our cultures.
The second reason they were there was for personal pecuniary reasons. They went to an opposition person cap in hand shamelessly begging not to be forgotten in appointments and contracts. By such actions they have cheapened themselves and displayed the character of mercenary politicians with no moral compass. Anyone without a moral compass is lost in the labyrinth of greed and self centeredness. For them politics is a bread and butter transactional enterprise. And the most unfortunate thing about the whole thing is the fact that majority of them are young people who should have represented a better future for our politics. But alas, they are quite the opposite. For too long we have blamed our elders for our woes, praying and pleading that they give the youth a chance to make a difference in leadership. Where is the difference in this kind of behavior?
One fatal mistake they made is to assume that the seat of power is a closed place. No. It’s as open as the skies. Everything that goes in or out of the place is in the open. Their entrance was an open book. Even their supposed confidential discussions were in the open. Nothing was hidden. Their host too was not the best in confidentiality. So, before they departed the place, everything was open. The peanuts they received as a parting gift, a paltry sum was also known to all and sundry.
What were the issues discussed? First the group complained that for the work they did in making sure their party did not win the election, they deserved a better deal. But just the previous day a large number of appointments were made. Not one of them or their nominees were considered. To them it’s like the man did not appreciate what they did to make him get to where he is. Their host apologized and promised to redress the situation. He told them that appointments had not ended and that certain contracts in agencies such as those concerned with education were in the offing and that they would surely be considered when dispensing such patronage.
Then they requested for land allocation and certificate of occupancy for land already acquired. They sounded desperate and cheap. They came with personal agendas that betrayed their greed and avarice. These facts were not lost to their host. He instantly realized that they had no bargaining power so he began to belittle them. At one point the discussions were simply master/servant diatribes. It was obvious they had no respect in the eyes of their host. It was a banal conclave of desperados. And their host savoured every moment of it. He put them exactly where they put themselves. No one respects a person crawling for favour. Respect is earned and it starts with self respect. If you have no self respect, then do not expect respect from anyone else.
In order to apportion some value to them, their host raised the issue of the cases before judicial chambers. He made it sound like he genuinely needed their assistance to win at the judicial level. He was even realistic enough to suggest that should there be a rerun election he needed assurances that they would betray their party and support him as they did in the past. Ordinarily this should have been a red flag. It meant they had no value outside of the betrayal of their party. But this did not register. It did not because they were fixated by expectations of patronage and favours to see the red flag flying.
The bounds of reason are often shattered by the allure of greed. One of them went into the usual braggadocio of people of little value by saying they had already taken care of the cases. That there was no case worth worrying about. That they have all the levers at the top and they have pulled all of those levers correctly. Surefootedly he said all cases are actually a no case situation. Their host was not impressed at all. He had an array of legal advisers to help him analyse the cases. He has access to confidential information to base his judgment on. No kindergarten bravado will make him think or believe otherwise. That’s why he painted a worst case scenario for them to note. They should have been cautious in giving him assurances regarding matters before the judiciary. But they want to prove they have their hands on the levers of power and they also own the party they claim to represent. Was their host really imprest with that? No he was not. Rather he took them on a voyage of discovery.
What did he do? He began to lecture them on the formation of their party, letting them know that they are just tenants in the party. He turned history on its head by letting them believe that he built the party in 2014. However and in actual fact events he occestrated in 2014 were meant to destroy the party. But he knew those before him had no sense of history or that their sense of history was blurred by both betrayal and greed. Otherwise they should have remembered that it was their host that said all House of Assembly members who claimed to belong to the party should have their seats declared vacant. All Local Government Councils that were elected under that same party were forcefully made to renounce the party. It was the height of insults to greedy minions that a person who attempted to destroy a structure they now live in could refer to them as tenants in that same structure. They lacked the courage to tell him that the one-sided history he narrated was just a strand in a long narrative. The rest may not be known to them, but are surely known to others. The biggest lie of the meeting was to say that once the cases are decided in favour of their host he will cross over to their party. Sometimes it is possible to be deceived by sugar coated lies. But this one is too barefaced. Nothing believable about it. Only people who block their ears with greed will believe such brazen lie. No one who is rational or sensible will believe such lies.
That meeting was indeed an eye opener. It speaks volumes to issues of greed, avarice and betrayals. It speaks volumes to matters of character and moral rectitude. It begs the question about party fidelity, about principles and about the future of multi-party democracy in a political atmosphere without defined character or value system. It defines the shameful pass we have reached as a people. Those who went for a meeting at which they were more or less cheapened and belittled by their host should really feel shamed by the turn of events. If you have to beg to be remembered, then you are cheap. If you must pledge to betray your oath of office to be favoured, then you are cheap. If you will go through all these to be given peanuts, then you are cheap.
They were cheap. They were pitiful. They were dishonourable. They sold their party for a pot of porridge. The only dividend they came out with was just shame. Shame for begging to be remembered as those who betrayed their party and their oath of office. Shame for throwing all in and getting nothing in return. Shame for the peanuts they received. Shame for being cheap. Cheap people will remain cheap even if you dress them in gold. Nothing cheapens a person like holding on to negative emotions like hate. Hate is a poison for the soul and it makes the bearer eat more poison as a cure. When mixed with greed it becomes a deadly concoction. May we all be saved from the destructive effect of hate and the ignominious perdition of greed.
Many respectable party members are really appalled by this brazen display of moral bankruptcy. There is a limit to how far trust can be breached without a repercussion. In the fullness of time all of these shenanigans will come to an end. Those who express voices of reason are villified, insulted and threatened. A meeting was even held at which it was stated openly that unless someone submits to their tendencies such a person will get no favours from the system they superintend. No one plays God while the Almighty reigns on his exalted throne. For those who believe in the power of God, those vain threats amount to nothing. Yes. Power is vanity. Yes. Wealth is vanity. Yes. Arrogance is vanity. What matters really is Trust. Once lost it is gone forever. “Mutunci Madara ne, in ya zube ba’a kwasewa” Either we are favoured with our self respect intact or we remain without favours but our self respect is intact.
As always I come in peace
