MGM Foundation has entered a collaborative pact with the Green Environmental Solution, (GESoL) for the afforestation and reforestation as parts of the measures in addressing climate change.
The founder of the Foundation, Muhammad Gidado Muhammad Saturday, disclosed this during a courtesy call on the management of the Green Environmental Solution (GESoL) Adamawa office, to seek for collaboration.
Represented by the foundation’s state chairman, Alhaji Umar Ahmed Sanda, the founder noted that climate change is a global phenomenon but awareness of the green revolution and planting more economic trees where one is cut will help in mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions based on human activities and desertification and erosion as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture.
Mohammed revealed that MGM Foundation perceived a positive future collaborating with GESoL to address challenges of deforestation with a view to expand the re-greening activities for which MGM Foundation equally has as an objective, to climate change activities.
“It is observed however that tree planting campaigns die at the very initial stage due largely to lack of political will occasioned by absence in monitoring and evaluation to be referred to as supporting supervision; to be able to curtail indiscriminate cutting of trees for charcoal and firewood for cooking in communities, the initiative to plant mainly economic trees makes a welcome development,” he said.
He explained that indiscriminate cutting of trees would have been averted when more economic trees are planted to replace trees that are cut, stressing that any attempt to pull down economic trees would be met with stiff resistance by the community in general.
Responding, a board of trustees member, Mohammed Auwal Ibrahim, representing the State Coordinator said GESoL is committed to help re-green communities as part of many efforts in addressing climate change by engaging, encouraging, educating, empowering and supporting children to plant economic trees in their schools and communities.
“We provided them with seeds and seedlings to plant and own; so that over time the plants will bear fruits that will serve as nutrition and potential income for them and the family,” he said.
He said the GESoL has provided over 30,000 seedlings to schools in 2023 and prizes were presented to some pupils who nurture trees they planted to serve as a motivation.
Ibrahim thanked the Adamawa State Basic Education Board for providing logistics for the smooth campaign exercise on tree planting that covered over one thousand schools in 2023.
MGM empowers youth and women to become self-reliant, sponsors pupils, foots the medical bills of indigent patients and organises sensitisation campaigns against drugs, on peace building, afforestation and reforestation, among other activities in Lagos, Abuja and Adamawa states.
The Foundation has in its usual humanitarian and philanthropic activities, again, introduced another empowerment scheme with a view to address the challenges of the less privileged women to become self-reliant.
