…Service to humanity with emphasis on empathy is synonymous with the CMD, MAUTH Yola, Prof Auwal Muhammad Abubakar…
The Periscope Global Publishers Personality of the Week is the Professor of Paediatric Surgery, the National President, Paediatric Association of Nigeria, APSON, the Chairman, Committee of Chief Medical Directors (CCMDs) and Medical Directors (MDs) of Federal Tertiary Hospitals, Professor Auwal Muhammad Abubakar, the Chief Medical Director, Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH Yola, Adamawa state Nigeria and a holder of Sarkin Gabas traditional title in Ganye Chiefdom.
The Paediatric Surgeon has made a record of carrying out successful separations of conjoined twins from Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue and Borno states, in addition to the one in Adamawa that was operated in the year 2013. Don’t ask about the “B4 states” coincidence.
The bottom line is that the separations were carried out free of charge with the parents of the conjoined twins enjoying free feeding and accommodation in the hospital, pre and post surgeries before the separated twins were fit for discharge.
As an administrator with humanitarian spirit, Prof Auwal has established a Hospital Paupers Fund, consisting of credible members charged with the responsibility to source for funds that would be utilised to foot the hospital bills of the indigent patients.
Owing to his outstanding standing in the society, the credibility of the committee members, if you like, the fund administrators and the transparency, efficiency and effectiveness in the way and manner the Paupers fund is being run, the monarchs, high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), philanthropic, governmental and non-governmental organizations and members of the public have contributed to the scheme.
This singular effort, has not only endeared the then minister of states for health who is the present minister of health, Dr Osagie Ehanire to present the activities of the Hospital Paupers Fund Yola before a Federal Executive Council meeting, as a succor to the very poor patients on admission in the then FMC Yola, the present MAUTH Yola, as much as it has attracted for Prof Auwal, the national award of recognition.
Presently, over 2,000 indigent patients have benefited from the fund scheme, more are benefiting as much as more shall benefit.
Some tertiary hospitals, desirous of establishing the same, have delegated some members of their staff to MAUTH Yola to study the activities of the Hospital Paupers Fund, Yola.

The spirited health administrator with empathy saw the need for befitting patient waiting areas in the hospital with a view to addressing the challenges of undue traffic, he casts for outside help and some well meaning individuals hearkened to the call for the intervention; they individually built the befitting patient waiting area and handed over to the management of the hospital.
The entire people of Ganye Chiefdom have doff their cap at Prof Auwal Muhammad Abubakar for the medical outreach being organised by the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria, APSON as a component in marking her 21st Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting, under Prof Auwal’s leadership.
“In the words of Dr Jacob Zamani, the Principal Medical Officer, General Hospital Ganye, where the APSON’s medical outreach was carried out, the event was a great expectation in the sense that, it was the first medical outreach, ever to be experienced since the building and commissioning of the hospital, by Sir Ahmadu Bello in August 1960, way older than the PMO himself.
Dr Zamani said it was not only the patients, the hospital has also benefitted from the medical outreach in the sense that the medical equipment and consumables APSON provided for the medical outreach were eventually donated to the hospital.
The sustainability of the ward’s inspection and assessment for the best ward of the month award is also noteworthy. It has received commendation as much as it has challenged other hospitals and organizations to key into the initiative.
Without the efforts of Prof Auwal in the expansion of the hospital in terms of man and machine, the thought of upgrading FMC Yola to a teaching hospital would not even be made a dream.
