Just a day before Independence Day, when the Labour Party would have been at the vanguard in ensuring the citizenry of its quest for getting the country out of the maze, as a pacesetter, especially to political parties in Adamawa state, devoid internal wrangling, came a newfangled development that the executive committee of the party has removed Adamawa state party’s chairman, Mr Christopher Nicholas, over alleged fraud and disloyalty to the party.
The allegations, bothered on selling of membership cards, divulging of information and refusal to submit the list of the state executive members of the party to the INEC office, was made Thursday in Yola, ahead of the visit of the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi.
Dr Zion Maina, who read the letter of expulsion, accused the chairman of not submitting the list of the state executive members of the party to INEC office, which he said was in violation of the party’s constitution.
Maina alleged that 9,000 membership cards were issued by the national headquarters. However, only 5,000 copies were issued to members of the party in the state.
The sack letter was signed by 21 out of the 24 EXCOs of the party.
Reacting to his sack, Mr Christopher Nicholas who denied contravening rules and regulations in handling the affairs of the party said he remained the state chairman of the LP.
Nicholas, who urged the LP members and general public to remain calm, said he remained the substantive chairman of the party in the state, adding that no decision made or taken by the party appeared to be entirely independent of the resolution or consent of the stakeholders of the party .
“I want to urge the general public to disregard my purported removal as the state party chairman,” he said.
He added that the names and signatures of those who signed the vote of no confidence letter were fake, so also the numbers of local government party chairmen listed.
There was the allegation that the state LP chairman covertly plays the informant, divulges information about the the activities of the LP to the opposition party
