The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the deadline for use of the old Naira notes to February 10, 2023.
The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, Sunday, announced the extension in a statement.
This was in response to the popular call for an extension of the deadline over scarcity of the new naira notes.
President Muhammadu Buhari and the CBN governor had earlier insisted that there would be no extension to the policy, pointing out that the time given for the swap of the old naira notes with new ones were enough for Nigerians to go to commercial banks and get new notes.
This went down badly with especially the middle class interviewed across the country. They wished that the CBN held tenaciously the no extension to the policy, so that by Tuesday, everything would have been over, it would be a new chapter with the new naira notes.
The citizenry can then insist on improving Nigeria’s foreign exchange with a view to restore the value of the naira at the international market.
