Adamawa State government has unveiled a new vaccine for cervical cancer.
According to the Chairman, Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Suleiman Sa’idu Bashir, the inoculation of the new vaccine known as “Human Papillomavirus Vaccine” would however commence from September 25 to 29, 2023, at some strategic areas in respective communities as well as in all the public health facilities offering routine immunization, adding that the vaccine is free, safe and effective.
Bashir explained that Cervical Cancer is the commonest Cancer and is a major cause of death amongst women.
He said, “although Cancer has no cure, it can however be prevented if timely action is taken.
“Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main causative agent for cervical cancer, a vaccine against HPV is available and it is the most cost effective means of prevention of cervical cancer.
“HPV vaccination, if given before exposure of the virus to girls aged between 9 to 14 years, would offer the maximum protection while women older than 14 years would require screening before they can be vaccinated”, he said.
Bashir has called on the parents to visit the nearest vaccination site to get their children and wards vaccinated.
In his goodwill message, a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Adamu Bello said the vaccine would go a long way to prevent young ladies from contracting Cervical Cancer.
Bello has applauded the efforts of the State Government and the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency for their commitments to ensuring that the exercise is implemented as planned.
