The Anticorruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit, ACTU, Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH Yola, Adamawa state, in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, (ICPC) Saturday, commemorated the 2023 International Anticorruption Day
The event started with integrity march from the gate to the venue of the sensitisation lecture at the Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Medicine Department of the health facility, displaying banners and fliers with inscriptions challenging malpractices, urging the citizenry to use transparency hammer and nip corruption in the bud.
The Acting Chief Medical Director, MAUTH Yola, Dr Ahmadu Baba Usman, represented by the Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Clinicals, Dr Maisaratu Bakari said the management of the health institution has the mission to make the hospital hospitable where integrity, transparency and accountability reign.
The CMD called on the participants to eschew all forms of corruption with a view to making the hospital and society a better place.
He said “today’s event serves as a powerful reminder that we as a healthcare professionals must uphold a high standard of honesty and accountability.
“Our mission to save lives and improve health outcomes demand a rejection of corruption in any shape and size.
“Let’s use this day to reflect on the importance of our roles in fostering integrity through education, vigilance and collective commitment.
“We can fortify our hospital as a beacon of trust and responsibility in healthcare in our community”.
The Acting Head of Administration, Alhaji Sanusi Rufai said the hospital system has been streamlined and strengthened not to accommodate corruption as evidenced in the EICS And AEI 2023 ranking where MAUTH Yola emerged first among the teaching Hospitals with the total score of 72.7 and 20th among 386 MDAs in the country.
Earlier in his welcome address, the ACTU chairman of the hospital, Dr Aminu MC Tahir enumerated the devastating effects of corruption to include insecurity, underdevelopment and bad governance; lamented the global ranking of Nigeria in 2022 as 150 better than only 30 countries with 24% score.
He said “fighting corruption is better with education, awareness and sensitisation”.
The theme of the sensitisation lecture was Behavioral Change in Mitigating Corruption; the Resident Anticorruption Commissioner, ICPC Adamawa State, James George Lawal Esq was the keynote speaker, he defined corruption as abuse of office for personal gain. He invited the citizenry to actively participate in the war against corruption, starting with attitudinal attitudinal change in tune with the philosophy that “change begins with me” and to say something where a decision when one senses or senses something sinister, rather than maintain the conspiracy of silence.
