The North East Development Commission, NEDC has launched a crucial initiative to eliminate cervical cancer in Nigeria with the successful completion of Training of Trainers (TOT) for 34 Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G) specialists from secondary and tertiary institutions in the the six northeast states of the country, namely; Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe, held on December 6, 2023.
The NEDC training programme in partnership with the Federal University of Humanitarian Science Azare (FUHSA), University of Miami (UM), Elimination of Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI), the Nigeria Cancer Society (NCS), and the AMEN Foundation, was started between November 6 and 8 2023, at Gombe state
According to the organisers, the training is grouped into two cluster with Borno, Yobe and Bauchi state as the first cluster and Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe as the second cluster.
“the commission concludes its state-level step-down training for the two clusters today, Wednesday, December 6th, 2023.
“In the first cluster, the training was held at State Specialist Hospitals, General Hospital Biu, (Borno), Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu and General Hospital Potiskum (Yobe) and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH, Bacuhi and Federal Medical Centre, FMC Azare (Bauchi).
“In the second cluster, the training was conducted at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, MAUTH Yola, State Specialist Hospital Yola and General Hospital Mubi (Adamawa), State Specialist Hospital Jalingo General Hospital Bali (Taraba), and State Specialist Hospital Gombe and Federal Teaching Hospital, FTH Gombe (Gombe).
“The state-level step-down training is aimed to cascade the knowledge gained by the initially trained Obstetrics and Gynecology (O&G) Doctors to 336 health workers, including nurses, midwives, and Community Health Extension Workers (Chews) in primary health facilities across the 112 local government areas in the 18th senatorial districts of the region.
The training programme consisted of theoretical sessions and hands-on practicals, allowing participants to gain firsthand experience by screening volunteers.
At the end of the training, participants are expected to provide screening services at their respective facilities, while also referring clients with further needs to secondary health facilities for additional investigations and management.
PARTICIPANTS COMMENDATION COMMENTS
Commenting, a participating CHEW from Hong local government area of Adamawa State having commended the overall training exercise said, “the hands-on practical’s during the training programme were invaluable. I was able to gain real-life experience by screening volunteers, which has greatly enhanced my skills and confidence in providing cervical cancer screening services at my facility.”
A midwife from Bali local government area of Taraba State said, “the theoretical sessions were incredibly informative and provided a solid foundation for understanding the importance of cervical cancer screening. Now that I have completed the training, I am eager to apply my knowledge and contribute to the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer in my community.”
According to a registered nurse/Midwife, RN/RM from Billiri local government area of Gombe State, “I overwhelmingly privileged to have been part of this training programme. It has not only equipped me with the necessary skills to conduct screenings, it has also emphasised the importance of referring clients with additional needs to secondary health facilities. I am committed to ensuring that every individual who walks through our doors receives the best possible care and support”.
Playing the supervisory role, the DGM Health Directorate of the NEDC, Dr. Batulu Isa Muhammad was at both Jalingo and Bali, Taraba state,
Dr. Muhammad, as an oversight function also visited Jhpiego/TMEC Rise office in Jalingo where she expressed appreciation for their support and leading role in providing services for cervical cancer in the state. She assured for a solid and sustained collaboration with the partner.
The DGM also actively participated in the monthly meeting, which brought together all partners and Taraba state government agencies in the health sector.
The collaborative gathering provided a platform for sharing updates, discussing progress, and strengthening partnerships to further support health related interventions and other humanitarians and development services in the state.
